Para remontarnos a los origenes de JOURNEY tendríamos que ir a San Francisco, el año 1966, cuando el joven HERBIE HERBERT se vió envuelto en la creciente escena músical de aquella época. El que iba a ser el manager de JOURNEY, empezó con una joven banda llamada FRUMIOUS BANDERSNATCH, en la que ROSS VALORY tocaba el bajo. Desafortunadamente, el grupo no consiguió lo que se esperaba de él. Pero Herbert consiguió trabajo como manager de producción de una joven banda emergente llamada SANTANA, donde conoció al teclista y cantante GREGG ROLIE. Tras la grabación de su segundo álbum "ABRAXAS", Santana añadió a su formación a un joven guitarrista de 15 años de nombre NEAL SCHON. Entonces la popularidad de la banda subió como la espuma, pero a causa de la espiritualidad que Carlos Santana quiso incluir en su música, la mayoría de su banda se disgregó.
