In 1942, Anne Frank was a young Jewish girl. She and her family were living in Amsterdam. THey had moved there from Germany. THey were trying to escape Adolf Hitler and his terrible regime. Adolf Hitler hated Jewish people. He made them follow strict rules. All Jews that were older than six had to wear a big yellow star. This let everyone in the city know who was Jеwish and who was not. Non-Jewish people wеre not allowed to help Jews. If they did, they could get in alot of trouble. Hitler's soldiers would also seize Jewish people. The soldiers would send them to prison camps. On July 5, 1942, Anne's sister Margot recieved a letter in the mail. It told ehr that she must move back to Germany and begin working. Anne's family would not let her go! They knew that many of the young Jews that were sent back to Germany were killed. The family needed to move somewhere safe. They had to leave their home quickly. Thankfully, Anne's father, Otto, had prepared a safe hiding place for his family and some close friends. He had turned part of his office building into a secret appartment. The Franks would move there the next day. Anne didn't have much time to pack. She also didn't have alot of space. She shoved her hair curlers, a comb, some schoolbooks, and old letters into a satchel. Though she didn't have much room in her small bag, she also packed her diary. She knew she couldn't leave that behind. The next morning Anne got dressed and ready to leave. The Franks were not able to pack and carry a suitcase. If people on the street saw them carrying one, they would know that the family was escaping. Instead, Anne had to wear any clothing that she wanted to take with her. She put on two vests, three pairs of pants, a dres, a skirt, a jacket, a raincoat, two pairs of tights, a cap, a scarf, and more! Anne was dressed like someone who might spend the night in a refrigerator! Over the next two years, the Frank family and four other people hid in the small annex. A small circle of close, non-Jewish friends visited them and brought needed supplies. Anne's quick escape forced her to leave many treasures behind. The diary she brought with her, though, would become Anne's constant companion. She wrote her thoughts, feelings, and hopes in that book. Years later, after Anne and most of her family died, the diary was published. "The Diary of Anne Frank" is now available for people all over the world to read.
