Science and science fiction would seem to, as their names suggest, have some sort of relationship. However, the question is not do they, but what is the exact nature of this relationship: things such as whether it is a reciprocal or one-sided relationship and in what ways do these two fields affect each other. Based on the testimony of scientists and science fiction authors, it appears to be a reciprocal relationship. Science fiction authors take existing principles and make extrapolations based on their knowledge of the field, inventing new technologies and principles and considering ways these affect society. In turn, scientists have been inspired by these ideas to pursue new avenues of research and even the field of science itself. By knowing and understanding this relationship, both scientists and science fiction authors can seek new avenues for inspiration.
