Es mejor conocido por su carrera en solitario y por haber formado parte de la banda Drive-By Truckers por 6 años. Niñez, Juventud y Vida Familiar Isbell nació en Green Hill, Alabama, a dos millas de la frontera del Estado de Alabama y Tennessee, su madre, Angela Colina Barnett, era diseñadora de interiores, y su padre, Mike Isbell, pintaba casas.
