Durante una primera etapa, su estilo se movió entre los derroteros del gospel, y de hecho, por su álbum debú Age to age (1982), recibió un Grammy como Mejor Actuación Gospel. En 1985 llegó su primer Nº1 en las listas de pop gracias al tema The next time I fall, un dúo junto a Peter Cetera.
