that looking for your roots

When Tagatac catches
a wild mountain goat
he jumps on its back
and rides it hard
until the goat drops
then gets it drunk
on ifugao wine
then he bites it hard
round the throat. Blood spurts
all over him
then he throws the goat
over the fire
until its belly swells up
then he cuts it wide open
Pulls on the entrails
wraps it round his body
then digs into it raw.
Tagatac says
that to eat raw goat is
pure pilipino

To eat with your hands
is to be free
and return back to your
ancestral roots

To drink goat's blood
sucking it from its throat
is to feel the veins
of the whole universe in
your body.

What stupid ass stories!
'Who would believe in such tales

Chased me behind some trees “What are you doing there?”
He said,
“Who are you hiding from?”

“I’m looking for Tagatac
In Ifugao mountain
Who scribes poetry
On rocks and trees”

“Where could I find
That son-of-a-bitch?”
“The old Ifugao hunter
Looked up at me
And said nothing
Then he said,
“Do you like pig ears?”

Then he kept chewing
On the pig's ear
Until the saliva ran down
The side of his mouth

The old Ifugao hunter said,
“Tagatac doesn’t come down
From the Ifugao mountain
There is nothing
He could tell you anyway
He speaks a weird tongue
Not many Understand him

He has a filthy mind and body
And bathes in monkey urine
And carabao dung
And drinks goats’ blood
Chews the eyes of wild boar.

Spends all his time
Drinking Ifugao wine
Drunk as a mountain fool
Writes poetry
In goat’s blood.”

The mind shouldn't bother
With the roots so much
If the mind bothers
with the roots
It'll forget
All about the weeds

Roots sprout up all over
like wild locust
Who is to say the weeds
are not the roots?

When the weeds are all eaten up
the spirit grows deep

Found nothing
but a dead path
