Someone blew a tire
Sparks flew in the grass
The Oklahoma wind
And the flames grew fast
I smelled the breath of hell
Death was all that I could taste
There were kids and horses screaming
But God still heard me pray
Just when I thought there was no way
We’d make it out alive
I saw kinfolk and pick-up trucks
Rollin’ up the drive
Neighbors and strangers
To put their lives in danger
Lord I hate to think what might have been
If not for friends
It burned 2,000 acres
Trying to get us
But those Oklahoma hearts
Built a wall of love
Fire trucks and first responders
Came from miles around
Faith in God and Okies
Shut that fire down
Just when I thought there was no way
We’d make it out alive
I saw kinfolk and pick-up trucks
Rollin’ up the drive
Some of them were neighbors
Most of them were strangers
Who thought enough of someone else
To put their lives in danger
Lord I hate to think what might have been
If not for friends
Those unsung heroes
Will never know what all they saved
The livestock and family
And this home where I was raised
I’ll be forever grateful
I’d repay them if I could
The grass will grow back
And people are still good
