Vivian Tanya Stephens nació el 2 de julio de 1973 en St. Mary, Jamaica. Desde una edad temprana, Tanya mostró un profundo interés por la música, influenciada por el ambiente cultural y musical de su país natal. Creció en una familia de clase media y se sumergió en los sonidos del reggae y dancehall que llenaban las calles de su comunidad.
A pesar de las dificultades económicas, Tanya se dedicó a su pasión por la música, participando en concursos locales y cantando en reuniones comunitarias. Sus primeras incursiones en la música no fueron fáciles, pero su determinación y talento innato la empujaron a continuar su camino.
En la década de 1990, Tanya Stephens comenzó a ganar atención en la escena musical jamaicana. En 1994, lanzó su primer álbum titulado "Big Things a Gwaan", que la presentó como una nueva voz prometedora en el género. Aunque este primer intento no alcanzó el éxito esperado, no la detuvo.
En 1996, lanzó su álbum "Too Hype", que incluyó éxitos como "Yuh Nuh Ready Fi Dis Yet". Este álbum permitió que el público y los críticos comenzaran a notar a Tanya, gracias a sus letras incisivas y su estilo vocal distintivo.
El gran salto de Tanya Stephens al reconocimiento internacional llegó con el álbum "Gangsta Blues" en 2004. Este disco no solo destacó por sus potentes letras y producción, sino que también mostró una mezcla única de reggae
