Gyptian, cuyo nombre real es Windel Beneto Edwards, nació el 25 de octubre de 1983 en la comunidad de King Weston, ubicada en la parroquia de St. Andrew, Jamaica. Criado en una familia profundamente religiosa, Gyptian fue expuesto desde temprano a la música gospel en la iglesia. Su madre, una devota cristiana, y su padre, un rastafari, influyeron de manera significativa en su vida y en su carrera musical.
Desde temprana edad, Gyptian mostró un talento innato para la música. A los siete años, ya cantaba en la iglesia y en eventos comunitarios, deslumbrando a quienes lo escuchaban. A los 18 años, decidió dedicarse profesionalmente a la música. Adoptó el nombre artístico de Gyptian, inspirado por su apodo "Egyptian" debido a su afición por usar pañuelos al estilo faraónico.
En 2004, mientras participaba en un concurso de talentos en Portmore, Gyptian fue descubierto por el productor Kenneth "Mr. Wong" Wilson. Mr. Wong quedó impresionado por el talento y la presencia escénica del joven artista, y decidió llevarlo a su estudio para grabar su primer sencillo, “Serious Times”. Esta canción, que aborda la complicada situación social y política de Jamaica, fue un éxito inmediato y se convirtió en un himno en la isla.
Con el éxito de “Serious Times”, Gyptian rápidamente ganó reconocimiento nacional e internacional. En 2006, lanzó su álbum debut, “My Name is
