Nació en Los Ángeles, California, Estados Unidos, el 15 de marzo de 1975. Inicialmente ganó reconocimiento como vocalista y DJ del grupo Black Eyed Peas. Tiene una compañía discográfica llamada A.M Records, con la cual ha lanzado varios sencillos que han llegado al número uno en las principales listas de música. Significado del nombre El rapero era conocido al principio como Will 1X, luego cambió su apodo artístico a Will.I.Am, tomándolo directamente de su nombre de nacimiento para, mediante un juego de palabras, decir, en inglés, soy Guillermo.
