Selena Quintanilla Pérez, conocida mundialmente como Selena, fue una empresaria, modelo, bailarina, diseñadora de modas y cantante de música tex-mex, ranchera, balada, pop latino y cumbia. Nació en Lake Jackson, Texas, Estados Unidos, el 16 de abril de 1971; falleció a los 23 años de edad el 31 de marzo de 1995 en Corpus Christi, Texas. Su muerte fue por caer víctima del disparo perpetrado por su gerente del club de fans, Yolanda Saldívar. La Reina del Tex-mex, como también se le conocía a Selena, logró el máximo estrellato a pesar de su corta vida. Vendió más de 70 millones de discos a nivel mundial y su nombre se conoció por todo el mundo. De acuerdo con la revista Billboard, fue catalogada como "la reina de la música latina, debido a que era la artista latina más influyente y de mayores ventas de la década de 1990".
